Brooklyn rap star Young M.A dropped her new Whoopty Freestyle track, Ooouuuvie, this week and gave Vybz Kartel’s GAZA Empire a huge salute. Though the nod was welcomed by the Jamaican fan base, it left some wondering how the Worl’ Boss would react to an openly LGBTQ female rapper, who prefers not to be labeled, repping for his Portmore Empire.

The reaction from the incarcerated Dancehall artist’s verified Instagram account was rather unbothered and more so moved by the recognition from the Hip Hop star.

The Any Weather deejay reposted a clip of Young M.A’s music video on Instagram with her shout out, “I’m in Jamaica speaking dat patois. Big up to the GAZA,” and in his caption, wrote, “BigUp @youngma 🤜🏾🤛🏼 #RealRecReal☝🏾Don #GazaBadness.”

Kartel’s post left onlookers excited and others slightly puzzled, as wider Jamaican society has a low tolerance for homosexuals. The Dancehall fraternity, in particular, has been the most vocal and the harshest critics ever.

This awareness opened up the conversations.

“Kartel posted a masc presenting lesbian on his page BIGGING HER UP LIKE,” tweeted one confused user. She actually thought the Worl’ Boss’s reaction was simply remarkable, further stating, “This is so iconic I’m sorry.”

Writer and filmmaker Sharine Taylor agreed, “Turning point tbh,” she said, but also went on to point out that Kartel was responsible for changing mindsets about certain things that were once considered taboo. “Remember Kartel was the same artist who * destigmatized all certain taboos. I’m just an observer,” she added.

After all, he popularized skin bleaching and made it into a fad some years ago, which soon enough led to a spike in many Jamaican youths adopting the trend up to today.

Though tempers flare in Dancehall for men who identify as homosexuals, there is way more leniency for women who do. It’s the same premise, which applauds Jamaican men for having a three-way romantic relationship with two women at once. And any true fan of Vybz Kartel would know, he’s all for that, which in essence means he’s a-okay with Young M.A and her repping GAZA.

In fact, another Dancehall deejay welcomes Young M.A (short for Me Always) — she has an upcoming collab with EastSyde trap-hall star, Skillibeng.

The deejay told Onstage host, Winford Williams last year July that an international collaboration with Young M.A was in the works, a partnership he said was organized by Claims Records.

Young M.A, 28, went quadruple platinum with her hit single Ooouuu in 2016 which Kartel sampled in his 2017 song Don’t Come Back. The New York-based singer remains independent despite the success and released her first studio album, Herstory in the Making in 2019. Her seven-track EP, Red Flu followed in May 2020.
