Portmore Empire artist Shawn Storm marches on even though he remains behind bars. The incarcerated dancehall deejay is set to release his debut EP, Freedom Street, at the end of this month, March 31.

Produced by his own imprint, Kwashawna Records, the project will feature some of the well-known artists associated with the Empire including Vybz Kartel’s right-hand man Sikka Rymes, Tommy Lee Sparta, and Chronic Law. Other artists like Shatta Wale, Shana Bliss, Wendy Shay, and DChase will also contribute.

Just last December 2020, Storm popped up on Instagram Live to wish his fans a Merry Christmas. During that session, which he shared with St Lucian singer MonCherie, he requested one of his collaborations with Shatta Wale called Juice to be played. That track has made the cut.

Storm and Kartel are serving life sentences in prison for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. While Storm will be eligible for parole after serving 22 and a half years, Kartel will have to serve at least 32 and a half years. Both men are appealing to the Privy Council in the United Kingdom for a reversal of the conviction.

The final artwork that seems to have been chosen for the album cover is an old photo of the Loyalty singer in a fitted hat, a throwback to when the Portmore Empire dominated the dancehall scene in the 2000s. He’s been in the game a long time and his perseverance is finally paying off as he will now finally be able to count an album among his accomplishments.

The deejay, who has made it known that nothing will shake his loyalty to Vybz Kartel, began his career in 2007 after being discovered by the Worl’ Boss. His first hit single would come a year later when he recorded Ghetto Youths be Wise. He followed that up with some mixtapes and a string of hits in 2009 and 2010 including the megahit Vybz Party on the Street Vybz riddim. He continued to gain popularity and would make his first true breakthrough with the single My Life which did well internationally.

Fans were happy to hear that Storm would be releasing an album. “Freedom street we a pree,” one fan said, another added: “Freedom soon kings shawn & worl boss.”
