Dancehall artist Charly Black believes his latest material will help him to secure a coveted Grammy Award. Black who dropped his So Many Reasons  EP  yesterday, February 26, revealed that he also has another body of work coming out before the end of the year.

According to the Party Animal hit-maker,  his latest EP is one in which he changes directions, in terms of his style and content, going from hardcore Dancehall and party bangers to songs that the whole family can enjoy.

“This one you can play around the kids, grandparents- It’s family-oriented and it is about love,” Black told DancehallMag. “I am a gold artiste, I have sold diamond already in the Latin world. So I am looking forward to take home the Grammy. That’s my aim,” he added.

Singles on Black’s latest EP include: Our Anniversary produced by DJ Floyd from Martinique,  Diggy Dee produced by Jazzy T from Renaissance sound system and Sak Noel, So Many Reasons produced by Teejay Records and Ravin his collab with Sean Paul.

Why the seismic shift?

Charly Black revealed that this softer style of music was something that he had always wanted to do but the opportunity had never really presented itself, noting that his record label embraced the project, whereas previous producers were not inclined to pushing him in this direction.

The artist further revealed that the EP was actually created two years prior but had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I have been signed to Universal Records to put out two albums. Originally, last year the album was to come out but I put a pause on it because of the whole COVID-19 situation. Based on the fact that this is our norm now, we just gotta do what we have to do,” Black said.

“I am always a person who is multitalented in the music. And this is a kind of project that I always wanted to put out long time,  long before I even have Party Animal,” he added.

While known for his more energetic and vibrant hits like Buddy Buddy, Whine & Kotch and Hoist & Wine, Black said his latest EP shows off his improved technical abilities in singing.

“On this particular project you can really see the improvements in my vocals, because I am really not a singer but a hardcore Dancehall artiste, so it different but I’ve grown.”

“This more of a calmer, love, more party same way but at the end of the day it is something I’ve always wanted to do; because if I ask a producer in Jamaica to do something like this they wouldn’t want to do it,” added Black.

Black also preempted the response of his fans, noting that based on the feedback he has received so far he believes the fans will appreciate his growth. “My fans are going to appreciate it. I have no doubt that people are going to love it. They are going to see that Charley Black has grown in the music. What’s the meaning of life without growth ?  And you can really hear my vocals, that I am becoming a better artiste and I’m really happy within myself with this EP,” he said.

The artist also said the pandemic has limited his ability to promote his music and reach his overseas fans. “Personally,  it affected my ability to promote music. Because when I tour and I sing a song the people them they literally go on their phone and go Google the song right at the concert so it put a damper on my music because you know I have a bigger fan base overseas than in the Caribbean. So it has been rough,” he said

“The reason I survive is  I put out great music. Luckily, I have a steady, very firm foundation, so  I have great songs like Party Animal that bring in an income monthly and I will get my cheques and try to feed my family because I don’t really work in Jamaica,” he added.
