Mavado Sends Encouragement To Son Accused Of Murder In New Song ‘Not Perfect’

Dante Brooks, the incarcerated teenage son of Dancehall artiste Mavado can expect a verdict on his murder trial sometime at the end of the month, according to his defense attorney Peter Champagnie QC.

The Gully Gad is evidently following the proceedings of his son’s trial very closely while remaining hopeful. He released a reflective track entitled, Not Perfect yesterday where he sent Dante some encouraging words as he also reminisces on his own run-ins with the law.

There has been a lot of talk following his son’s incarceration in 2018 when he was charged for the murder of Lorenzo Thomas, otherwise called ‘Israel’ or ‘Trulups’, in Cassava Piece, St Andrew. The charges laid against Dante and the co-accused, Andre Hines include conspiracy to murder, arson, shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.  If convicted, Brooks could be sent to prison for life, however, has vehemently maintained his innocence.

Mavado mentions his undying support for his son in the new track saying people love to talk even when they don’t know the true story, but like his son, the deejay is optimistic that he’ll be returning home sooner than later. “Just know very soon dat yuh coming home,” he sings in the song. Mavado also took to Instagram a couple of days ago to send more positive words to Dante as he fights for his future. He wrote, “The light will shine the dark will be brighter soon. 🙏🏿” and in another post, “Love you son 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏,” along with photos posing with each other.

Speaking with The Star yesterday, Dante’s attorney said the trial, which got underway on Monday, could continue for several more days.

Champagnie told The Star that he is not prepared to say whether or not he believes his client will beat the charges but said he would do everything in his power to present the strongest case possible.

Last November, it was revealed that Brooks’ defense team opted to have the trial heard only by a judge, as opposed to a judge and jury. At the time, Champagnie told The Star that the decision was arrived at “having taken into consideration a number of factors”. Brooks now, 18, will be tried as an adult. He has been in juvenile detention in Kingston, Jamaica having had multiple bail applications denied.
