Well known disc-joc ZJ Liquid recently addressed his BET Awards appearance and brand new LP, Point A View.

Catching up with the hosts on The Fix podcast, the radio deejay, producer and selector spoke about honing and advancing his skills as a recording artist. The 14 track album features acts like I-Octane, Beenie Man, Dean Fraser, Vershon, Konshens, Verse Simmonds, Ishawna, K’Coneil and more.

“The title of the album means it’s just my music from my view, my vibes…I am doing higher quality, higher level and different vibes of music but still representing for the females,” Liquid said. “I have grown and I am more experienced to a wider variety of music right now. Been working on it year and a half almost two years now, tek a likkle hiatus after the Mobay Son EP, groom miself, study music pon a different level as in melody, keys, delivery, voice control, all of dat.

During this time, he not only collaborated with, but learned a great deal from a select few peers including Seanizzle, Dane Ray and I-Octane. Despite his established status, the renewed focus and tenacity was all about ‘paying his dues’ to create a solid body of work he could stand by. Satisfied with the album which dropped on October 2nd, Liquid summarized his creative process this time around.

“It’s all about the chemistry. It’s not like we a diss nobody or other producers nuh good. You can’t rush it, you can’t really force it, sometime you know you just have to really feel it,” he said. “Sometimes you ah push things weh people nah really connect to that. [Point A View] is more of a mainstream album. It have a little of everything, meaning topics and genre a little fusing of this and that.”

As he joins the ranks of those contributing to dancehall as artists, he’s still pretty hype about selector duties and is keeping a positive post-pandemic outlook. The popular veteran let on that he’s lost considerable income due to the cancellation of local and international peak season bookings.

When asked whether he missed live shows, Liquid quipped, “Of course, you miss the real people dem, the roar of the crowd. People just ah drink, the real vibes enuh, the real interaction.” Adding that he appreciated virtual connections, he nostalgically lamented, “We waah hear di fence dem ah beat dung, di nice girl dem inna di party, yu know, party like we normally do an nuh haffi look pon di clock.”

A new career highlight however, has emerged from the restricting global plight.

BET recently curated the first Reggae/ Dancehall cypher for the 2020 Awards ceremony and Liquid was once again tasked to the turntables. The appearance materialized through his management — Romeich ENT — and the grateful deejay said it was a pleasure to represent alongside major names from the island like Beenie Man and Koffee.
