Reggae star Protoje has provided a little back story to his recent collaboration with American rapper Wiz Khalifa.

The song titled A Vibe is an ode to their love of smoking marijuana and holding a sweet vibe, and appears on Protoje’s album In Search of Lost Time, which has been out for just over a month now. Fans have been loving the ten-track compilation and some expect that it should be in Grammy contention at the 2021 awards.

In an Instagram video posted yesterday, Protoje explained that a line in Khalifa’s verse indicated how the pair first met even though the rapper didn’t know it was him at the time.

One of the lines of the verse goes, “You ain’t always gotta pay, I’ll let you hold one,” with Protoje believing Wiz was singing about their meeting without realizing it.

Protoje related that around three years ago, he was at a Red Bull Culture Clash show in London, having been invited by Supadups of Black Chiney Music. During a backstage chill session, which was populated by a number of other musicians, including Wiz, Protoje was busy holding a vibe when the meeting happened.

“So me go one a way inna a likkle corner and a hold a vibes, him forward like him dis wan ketch a likkle one a way too…. and mi see the man a crush out this whole heap a ganja. Him a do him ting and mi a mind my business.”

Him build up this giant spliff, tek two offa the spliff and he’s like ‘hey Bro you want some’ and I’m like you know say this a one of the most notorious herb smokers inna the world so mi a say mi want see what da herb ya feel like,” he said.

“Take two offa the spliff and mi a give him back and he’s like ‘No bro, that’s all you bro, that’s all you’ and him just start crush out a next spliff and him no know mi from no where” the IN.DIGG.NATION frontman added in the video.

For Protoje, the verse is sort of cosmic as Wiz was basically singing about their meeting those years back when they had shared a joint together.
