Score one for Dancehall! Popular Jamaican singers, Popcaan and Koffee, and reggae legend Bob Marley have all made former US president Barack Obama’s 2020 Summer Playlist.

The playlist was started in 2015, and of course, most artistes featured on it usually go on to have a spike in both popularity and sales.

The former president of the United States made the announcement via his Twitter account today. He said: “Over the past few months, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to music with my family. I wanted to share some of my favorites from the summer—including songs from some of the artists at this week’s @DemConvention. Hope you enjoy it.”

Grammy award winner Koffee made the list for the second consecutive year.  She was listed this year for her efforts on John Legend’s Don’t Walk Away after making the list last year for her mega-hit Toast.

Newcomer to the list, Popcaan, has been having a brilliant year with regards to his career. His song with OVO boss Drake and Party Next Door, called TWIST & TURN, made the cut.

Obama must be keeping up with current trends as TWIST &TURN was only released ten days ago (August 7) from Popcaan’s latest album, FIXTAPE.  The hot track has already crossed 1.4 million views on YouTube.

Popcaan has been looking to extend his reach and has been consistently trying to break into the US market. Such an endorsement from the former President is sure to have a positive impact on his American appeal.

He was also recently featured on American rapper Dave East’s third installment in his Karma mixtape series, which dropped last Friday, August 14, on a song called Unruly.

Just today, August 17, Popcaan celebrated his debut on Billboard #200 at 94 with FIXTAPE. He thanked his fans for helping him get there. “Respect to everyone who made this possible forever grateful. @billboard unruly fans up forever 🤘🏿#fixtape,” he said on Instagram.

Rounding up the list of Jamaicans appearing on Obama’s list was the legend of reggae, Bob Marley, for his song Could You Be Loved.
