One of the more popular artistes of the 90s, Mr. Lexx is confident that his new project, Touch Down, released last Friday, August 14, will remind dancehall fans of what he is capable of.

The Touch Down EP was produced by Tripple Ess Music, Clive Hunt, and Christopher Palmer.

Mr. Lexx, whose real name is Christopher George Palmer, was once known as Lexxus and is best known for the success of his debut album called Mr. Lex on the Billboard Reggae Chart and for his collaboration with Wayne Wonder on a track titled Anything Goes. That song was also featured American rap duo Capone-N-Noreaga for the Red Star Sounds: Def Jamaica compilation, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album.

In 2019 he released a track called Back It Up, which he said he expected to fill the gap for ‘gyal songs’ in the genre. The song received a good reception and so he hopes to capitalize on its popularity. He spoke with the Jamaica Star about the upcoming EP.

“I am still doing music and still capable of connecting with people,” he said. “I was playing around with a couple of names for this project and for some reason ‘Touchdown’ just seemed to fit because I think it’s about time I start scoring (musical) goals again. I have it and now everyone will get the chance to witness that again.”

The EP features fresh and previously unheard sounds from several up-and-coming artistes. Mr. Lexx added that because of his veteran status he felt it was very important to give back to younger artistes. He also revealed that the move was deliberate.

“No established artiste is featured on this project, and that was deliberate because I feel that sometimes we as veterans need to give younger artistes an opportunity they will cherish for the rest of their lives.”

He added: “All seven of these young artistes really look up to me and so I wanted to take them along for the ride. They will be the ones in the game when Mr Lexx retires, and so this is good starting grounds for them. I think this is a really good compilation and I’m expecting it to do well.”

The Full Hundred singer went on to say that he’s also added some new vibes to his style.

“I didn’t want anyone to box me in the whole ’90s artiste thing’ or ‘Lexxus’ (his previous name) being the ‘girl deejay’ and so I try to do different things. So it’s going to be me but with a little twist,” he said. “I wanted to make it something everyone could relate to and not just Jamaicans, and I think the world will appreciate the way I have put things together.”
