Vendetta fans are in for a musical treat this year, as ‘the man himself’ Alkaline has announced the second staging of his ‘New Rules’ concert.

On his Instagram page, the man of few words posted the official flyer for the concert date and venue. “NEW RULES: Jamaica” will be held on Saturday, April 25 at the Constant Spring Golf Club in Kingston.

On the event’s official page, @newrules2020_, one post tags Alkaline along with Mavado and Jahmiel, suggesting that they will also be among the major performers at the event.

The trio, known as MVP (Mavado, Vendetta and Patriotz) have had a great musical relationship, even collaborating in 2019 on their dancehall hit, Jealousy.

Vendetta fans are ecstatic for the return of “New Rules” as Alkaline has been scarce of the local scene for years. At the beginning of his career, the deejay was heavily criticized for his 2014 Reggae Sumfest performance that many fans described as “lacklustre”. As Alkaline continued to rise, he began to gain more international attention which resulted in much more performances overseas, including the much-talked-about “Afrochella” in Ghana.

In recent years, the “detta boss” has only performed at a handful of major shows in Jamaica including Reggae Sumfest 2017 and the first staging of New Rules, also in 2017. He only returned to perform in Jamaica in 2019 during Dream Weekend.

In 2017, at a time when much of the criticism surrounding Alkaline’s career was if he could perform and carry a major event as a headliner, “New Rules” silenced all the doubters and further established the deejay as a dancehall heavyweight. The success of the event, which drew thousands to the National Stadium’s car park, solidified the artist’s loyal fanbase as well as his place at the forefront of dancehall.

Among the artists that performed at New Rules in 2017 were Mavado, Jahmiel, Shaggy, Tarrus Riley and I-Octane. FMB, Stacious, Iba Mahr, Chase Cross and Flexx also performed.

But can he mirror the success of the first show? It has been three years since the first staging of New Rules and there has been much debate on whether Alkaline’s career has slowed down since then.

He hasn’t released music as frequently as he did in his earlier years, but he currently receiving much more international recognition now, as an established dancehall artist.

The success of the concert will tell.

More details are expected to be revealed in the weeks leading up to the event.
