Ganggoolie And Admiral Tibet Lead Out The Wagonist Riddim By DJ Jason
Music critics are raving about the music producer DJ Jason’s ‘Wagonist’ rhythm which was released in October on his own DJ Jason Music label.
Reggae artiste Ganggoolie drops the title track ‘Wagonist’ where he burns a fire on all bandwagonists — that particular class of people who join a cause or grant support only when it is popular or fashionable to do so.
Spanish Town-based dancehall-reggae artiste Ganggoolie is at the height of his powers as he deejays with force and clarity that: ‘mi no waan see no waggonist, high inna the cloud, yu know the cannabis/ all of a sudden dem ah put mi pon the honours list’.
After delivering the title track, Ganggoolie shows up again on the project with the romantic ‘Caan Get Enough of You’ where he professes his love for the female in his life.
Reggae icon Admiral Tibet still retains the resonance and tenacity that has made him such a force in the industry. Admiral Tibet’s voice floats beautifully above the rhythm as he declares: ‘caan believe say it’s so evil out there, caan believe it’s so wicked out de, but mi nah run go nowhere’. It is an affirmation that one has to hold firm to one’s value systems or one can easily fall on the wayside in the pursuit of life.
Dancehall artiste Chico, a star from the 1990s, shows up on ‘Chance’ which is arguably the best song on the rhythm track. Chico bleeds all over the track as he croons: ‘if you give me a chance to love, i promise you, come to me/I will never put another girl above you/there aint need no need for jealousy’.
Chico pulls out all the stops as he speaks about compatibility and true love, waxing lyrical as he convinces the object of his affection that ‘you were made special for a king’. The song is really well-written and Chico uses different melodies to show his musical range. He goes all to woo the ladies as he promises to “play my cards right to get the attention that I seek/I just want to make sure you see how I am caught up and so weak’.
Reggae artiste Ras Ajai brings fire and passion to ‘Broken Pieces’ while Brown Paper Boss bears his heart and oozes passion with his words on a gravelly delivery on ‘Life ah Di Greatest’. A talented newcomer, Brown Paper Boss paints poignant street narratives of the struggle of youths who grapple with crime and violence in the inner city.
Triple Blaxx strikes a chord with ‘If I Follow My Heart’, a plaintive cry with a man who is faced with a decision in his romantic love, a competition between his heart and external forces.
Other standout songs round out the project such as Truvice with his soulful promise, ‘Coming Home’, where he expresses his undying love for his family even as he runs the street to support his family. He warns : ‘if you keep calling, the work will be stalling and that ain’t good for me and you’ .
Dillgin strikes a regretful tone on ‘I Should Have Listen’.
Other good songs include Vylmark’s ‘Tanisha’ and Jahsee’s ‘Family’.
