Tanya Stephens (Vivienne Tanya Stephenson) is a dancehall and reggae deejay and singer from St. Mary, Jamaica, known for candid, socially aware lyrics that moved beyond typical dancehall themes to take on objectification of women and homophobia. She broke through in 1996 with “Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet”, produced by Dave Kelly, and reached international recognition with “It’s a Pity”. Her albums include Gangsta Blues (2004) and Rebelution (2006), which produced the Caribbean number one “These Streets”, and she co-founded Tarantula Records with Andrew Henton. She was named one of the top female artists in Jamaica by the Washington Post in 1998, alongside Lady Saw.
