DancehallMag is the leading independent publication covering Dancehall and Reggae music, the artists, and culture since 2019.

The meaning of “Lockdown” works on two levels. It is a song about the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is also a love song. When it came out in July 2020, The Gleaner reported that the lyrics speak to romantic love and a post-quarantine world.

Boomshots, writing at the end of that month, said the song was more than just a Covid-era contemplation and called it a poignant love song that speaks to the challenges of romance during a time of viral pandemic.

The artist, born Mikayla Simpson, performs under the stage name Original Koffee and formerly as Koffee. That is why streaming services now credit the song to Original Koffee.

The Lyrics Explained

Pitchfork included the song in its list of the best songs of 2020. A 2020 report on that list noted that the song begins with a question many people have probably asked themselves during COVID-19 quarantining: where will we go once the pandemic is under control and we are again allowed to go about without restrictions.

In a 2020 interview, Boomshots said the song has Koffee asking all of the questions everybody in the world is asking themselves right now.

The title is a double meaning. In 2020 the word described quarantine. In the song, Koffee also uses it to mean holding on to a partner.

The 2020 report on the Pitchfork list described the hook as a play on words that suggests a love story played out in the age of the coronavirus. The verses deal with a partner who has said they don’t want a relationship.

Koffee asks the person to be clear about how they feel, and if they don’t feel the same way, she asks them to let her go.

Boomshots described “Lockdown” as Koffee’s first love song and said it represents a milestone in Koffee’s catalog.

When asked who inspired the song, the publication wrote that all we can say about that is just cool. That means the subject of the song has not been publicly confirmed.

A 2026 retrospective by ArtOnly compared the song with her breakthrough single “Toast,” writing: Where “Toast” is open and celebratory, “Lockdown” is more internal, more guarded.

How “Lockdown” Was Made

Koffee told the story behind the song in a 2020 Instagram Live interview with Boomshots for VIBE. She said she began visiting Popcaan’s studio to just record some stuff like in the meantime while everything is kinda shut down.

There she met producer Dane Ray, and she explained: “So me set a link there and Dane Ray play me a track, which was ‘Lockdown’ instrumental.”

She wrote to the beat on the spot. About a week later she listened back, decided she liked it, and called her manager to plan a video.

Reports differ on who produced the song. Boomshots/VIBE (2020) credited it to Dane “Raygad” Ray from the Unruly camp, and a July 2020 DancehallMag news report also named Ray as producer.

REVOLT (July 2020) instead called it the Nate Brown and Waldane Hugh-produced effort. We could not find a source that settles the difference between these two credits.

Release and Music Video

According to Discogs and Apple Music listings, “Lockdown” came out as a single on July 17, 2020, through Promised Land Recordings.

The Gleaner reported that the song and its video came out together without any big announcements or countdowns or exclusive premieres. The paper also quoted Koffee calling the song “a gift to fans during the global pandemic”.

IMDb credits Yannick Reid as director of the video, with Habibi as co-director. REVOLT wrote that the video shows Koffee hanging and driving through different locations around Jamaica, including to a spot where fellow Reggae artist Popcaan makes a cameo.

VIBE also mentioned a cameo from Dre Island. Not every review was positive. HotNewHipHop said the video makes for a bit of controversy because the block party scene shows no one wearing masks.

Reception and Legacy

DancehallMag reported in July 2020 that “Lockdown” recently became the fastest track by a Jamaican reggae artiste to surpass a million views on YouTube in 48 hours. Boomshots named it the publication’s official 2020 Summer anthem.

In December 2020 Pitchfork placed it on its 100 Best Songs of 2020 list, where “Lockdown” by Koffee is listed at Number 72.

Lockdown” is the closing track of Koffee’s debut album, Gifted. DancehallMag reported in February 2022 that the ten-track album will include her previously released West Indies single, as well as her summer 2020 summer Lockdown.

Gifted was released on 25 March 2022 by Promised Land Recordings and Columbia Records, although DancehallMag’s April 2022 sales report named Promised Land/RCA as the label.

In that same report, DancehallMag said “Lockdown” was the most-streamed new song on the album. HypeLife Magazine put its stream count at about 63 million at the time. That number is from 2022 and has probably grown since.
