The Dancehall community is draped in mourning today as Kiprich — born Marlon Plunkett — confronts another devastating blow: the sudden passing of his father, Magnus “Mr. Chin” Lloyd Plunkett, who died Friday at age 72.
It’s a wound that arrives on top of an already brutal year. And for the vet deejay, the weight is almost too much to say aloud.
“This ah one of the roughest years, mi father, only Almighty knows,” Kiprich confessed, his voice cracking with grief — the same voice that just months ago was raw with loss after the newborn he sired with his fiancée didn’t survive.
The end came without warning. Kiprich revealed his father had been fighting kidney issues and was scheduled to take further urine tests — a routine step that turned devastating in an instant.”My brother is down in Jamaica, and he was cooking some soup for him,” Kiprich recalled, the memory vivid and painful.
“When he went to check on him, he was unresponsive.”
Despite the frantic rush, there was no revival. Mr. Plunkett was pronounced dead at the hospital — leaving a family shattered, and a son forced to process the unthinkable.
But even as he grieves, Kiprich is determined the world remember the man behind the name.
Affectionately nicknamed “Mr. Chin” for his Midas-like instincts, the elder Plunkett built his reputation as a fearless transport operator and owner — the kind of hustler who could take a small operation and turn it into something major.
“He was able to turn any small business into something major… his mentorship was unmatched,” Kiprich said, painting a portrait of a man as generous with his secrets as he was sharp with his business.
“People would naturally gravitate to him.”Beyond the boardroom, there was a softer, warmer soul — a die-hard reggae lover who lived for the music and hit the dancefloor with a signature “rude boy” swagger that was pure identity.
He leaves behind a full house: four sons — Kiprich, Ricardo, Sprite Rafer and Jamal Plunkett — and a daughter, Kayla Plunkett. And beside them, mourning through it all, is his wife Carrol Plunkett, his partner for 32 years since they tied the knot in 1994.
For Kiprich, the road ahead is steep. But in true Dancehall spirit, he’ll carry his father’s hustle — and his heart — into every stage he steps on.
