Nipsey Hussle walked away from a major label opportunity with Rick Ross and Maybach Music Group, choosing instead to hold out for a deal that would keep his team fully in control. His brother and business partner Blacc Sam has now spoken openly about how close that signing came to happening, and why Nipsey ultimately said no.
According to Blacc Sam, Ross was genuinely invested in Nipsey’s career long before any formal deal was on the table. During a period when the Hussle camp was navigating serious street pressures alongside the grind of pushing music independently, Ross’s support carried real weight. The fact that Ross was there and making sure Hussle was on features with Ross and bringing things and speaking about him, that helped tremendously,” Blacc Sam said.
The relationship eventually moved toward a formal business conversation. Blacc Sam recalled Ross making clear he was prepared to deliver, telling Nipsey, “Look, bro, whatever you want, I can get it done now.” The offer was significant enough that Blacc Sam himself felt the urgency to move on it. Bro, we need to get this,” he said, describing a moment when the crew was dealing with legal cases and financial pressure to keep their operation running.
Nipsey’s response, however, was rooted in something beyond the immediate opportunity. He acknowledged what the deal could do, but held firm. “I appreciate the opportunity. I know what it could do, but when we finally do this, it got to be all money in,” Nipsey told his team. Blacc Sam recalled him being equally direct about his reasoning, saying he could not take the opportunity away from the people around him as label founders and that the terms had to reflect full commitment from all sides.
Blacc Sam described his brother as someone who operated from conviction rather than convenience. Hussle just moved from his heart and what he felt,” he said, noting that the stakes at the time were considerable.
The patience paid off. The team eventually secured a deal with Atlantic Records structured on exactly the terms Nipsey had insisted on, with the all money in framework intact. It was the outcome Nipsey had envisioned even when a faster, larger path was sitting in front of him.
The story adds another dimension to how Nipsey Hussle built his career, not by rejecting the industry outright, but by refusing to enter it on terms that would dilute what he and his team had built. Ross, for his part, has spoken publicly about his respect for Nipsey on multiple occasions, and Blacc Sam’s account confirms that respect was mutual and longstanding, even when it did not result in a formal partnership.
