Radio broadcaster Captain Kirk found himself on the receiving end of the tributes as reggae artistes, broadcasting colleagues and loved ones gathered in South Florida to give “The Bad Boy of Radio” a surprise birthday celebration.
Held at a private venue, the gathering honoured Kirkland Anthony Nelson with live performances, personal recollections and video greetings celebrating the friendships he has forged through radio and entertainment.
Music industry figures Clinton Lindsay and Sir Rockwell joined members of the Island Gold Radio family, relatives and longtime friends for an occasion steeped in Caribbean music and affection.
The soundtrack was fitting for a broadcaster with a passion for reggae and dancehall. Familiar favourites prompted guests to reminisce and dance, while a succession of live performers brought their own birthday offerings.
Veteran reggae singer Ed Robinson was among those who performed, alongside G Cole, who recently released his album Black Green and Reggae.
Nkruma, Yahmistic, CJ Culture and Sharper than Razor also contributed to the musical programme, while emerging singer Soul Rebel serenaded the birthday celebrant.
The tributes extended beyond the room. Uton Green, Big Mountain, Ginjah and Papa Michigan were among those offering greetings, with some messages delivered by video.
Friends and colleagues shared memories of Nelson’s personality, his work behind the microphone and the relationships built along the way. Together, their contributions gave the celebration a warmth that went beyond the customary birthday formalities.
For a man known as “The Bad Boy of Radio”, the verdict on the night was decidedly affectionate: a roomful of people, and several voices from afar, happy to sing his praises.
