Vybz Kartel just did something no male dancehall artiste has managed before. The Worl Boss has crossed 4 million followers on Instagram, making him the first man in the genre to reach that number and only the third living Jamaican artiste to get there at all.
The two names ahead of him are both women. Shenseea leads living Jamaican acts by a wide margin with 9.6 million followers, while Spice sits at 4.8 million. Kartel now rounds out a top three that the dancehall queens had to themselves until this week.
The gap behind him is just as telling. Popcaan, the artiste Kartel once mentored in the Portmore Empire camp, is his closest male rival at 3.3 million followers. Sean Paul follows with 2.7 million, and Shaggy comes in at 2.3 million.

Those last two numbers stand out when you consider the international track records involved. Sean Paul and Shaggy have both landed number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with songs like Get Busy and It Wasn’t Me, and both have Grammy wins for Best Reggae Album. On Instagram, though, it’s Kartel who pulls the bigger crowd.
The timing makes the milestone land with extra weight. It arrives right in the middle of a fresh argument over who deserves the title of King of Dancehall, a debate reignited by comments from Shaggy.
Kartel’s supporters will point to the follower count as another piece of evidence, while others will argue that a crown in this genre gets decided by records, sound clashes and longevity rather than social media numbers.
Kartel’s online pull is even more striking given his recent history. He spent more than a decade behind bars after his 2011 arrest and 2014 murder conviction, and he kept releasing music the entire time.
The Privy Council quashed that conviction in March 2024, and he walked free that July after Jamaica’s Court of Appeal decided against a retrial.
Since then, the appetite for anything Kartel has only grown. Fans who kept his name alive through years of prison releases now have the artist back in public view, and the follower curve reflects that.

There’s still one name sitting above everyone. Bob Marley, decades after his death, remains the most followed Jamaican music figure on Instagram with 10.1 million followers. Kartel is less than halfway to that number, while Shenseea is within striking distance of it.
For now, Kartel holds a spot no male dancehall act has occupied before. The debate over the throne shows no sign of cooling off, and with his numbers still climbing, the next milestone might arrive before anyone settles who wears the crown.
