The meaning of “Limb by Limb” comes straight from the hardcore dancehall of the early 1990s. Cutty Ranks’s song is a gun lyric about crushing rivals: the narrator swears to take enemies apart piece by piece and leave them unable to speak.
It is a deejay’s boast, built on threats and bravado. Later, jungle producers in the UK sampled it so often that the vocal became one of the best known sounds in that genre.
Release Details
Most sources date the original record to 1993. The UK 12-inch came out on Fashion Records (catalogue FAD 108) in 1993 with three versions: the original, an acapella and a hip hop remix.
The writing credit goes to P. Thomas, which is Cutty Ranks’s birth name. Last.fm lists him as Philip Thomas, born in Jamaica in 1965.

Discogs says the track was recorded, voiced and mixed at A-Class Studio. There was also a Jamaican 7-inch on Fashion with the vocal on side A and a version on side B.
The sources do not all agree. A 2025 Caribbean American Weekly profile says he recorded “The Bomber,” “A Who Seh Me Dun,” and “Limb by Limb” in 1991. Discogs and Riddimguide both give 1993. The producer credit also differs.
The 1993 Fashion pressings say “Produced For, Fashion Productions”, but Shazam’s listing for the 2008 VP anthology credits Donovan Germain as producer. We could not settle either question.
The Riddim
Riddimguide lists the song on the Fever Pitch riddim, released by Fashion in 1993. Fashion was started by John MacGillivray and Chris Lane.
Riddimsworld says the same rhythm carried General Levy’s “Champagne Body” and Elephant Man’s “City Lock”, and calls “Limb by Limb” the obvious anchor of the set. According to WhoSampled, the original samples Peter Tosh’s “Burial”.
The Lyrics Explained
In the chorus, Cutty promises to cut his enemies down limb by limb, send for a hacksaw and cut out their tongues. Those are the lines most people mean when they search for “limb by limb meaning.”
A lyric-interpretation site reads the image as a ruthless and systematic approach to dealing with opposition or enemies, with cutting out the tongue standing for silencing and rendering the adversary powerless.
The verses keep up the threats. Cutty calls himself a hitman who can’t be finished off. He mocks rivals who expect him at their funerals and dismisses men who act like they run the world. He even describes his gun as his girl.
That interpretation site points out that the song uses references to guns, violence, and confrontation to drive home its themes of power and defiance.
The imagery suits the artist. Wikipedia says his first job after leaving school was as a butcher, and Last.fm says his stage name comes from that work.
In 2012, LargeUp noted that the butcher-turned-artist “has never been for the squeamish” and named the hacksaw hook as one of his signature lines.
From Dancehall to Jungle
The song had a second life in UK jungle. A 1995 Suburban Base 12-inch paired the DJ SS Mix with Marvellous Cain’s “The Hitman” and the original ragga mix.
The sleeve described the DJ SS mix as taken from the forthcoming album “Rumble in the Jungle Vol. 2”. WhoSampled says the DJ SS version samples Lyn Collins’s “Think (About It)” and The Winstons’ “Amen, Brother”.

Time Out lists Marvellous Cain’s “Hitman” among the best jungle tracks ever. It says the track samples Cutty Ranks’s anthem “Limb By Limb” and recommends the killer Dream Team remix.
The 1993 hip hop mix also got attention: WhoSampled says it samples “The Champ” by The Mohawks. WhoSampled tags the original as sampled in more than 40 songs, including Jamie xx’s “KILL DEM” (2022) and Machinedrum’s “DDD” (2012). Remixes still appear. A DJ Hybrid remix came out on Jungle Cakes in March 2020.
Legacy
Apple Music’s notes for VP Records‘ 2008 anthology say “The Stoppa” and “Limb By Limb” became major club hits in New York and London.
That 31-track collection is titled after the song. The track’s Spotify page showed more than 30 million plays when we checked in October 2026.
Cutty Ranks still talks about it. In a March 2026 interview, Reggae-Vibes reported that he looked back on A Who Seh Mi Dun, The Stopper, and Limb By Limb while promoting his 2026 album Black List.
