Three days before signing his cooperation agreement, OTF Vonni was on a recorded jail call comparing his upcoming testimony to a job interview. “I’m dressing to impress. I’m speaking to impress, well rested, well fed, have my lunch box,” he said, laughing through the whole thing.
That call became the centerpiece of Day 9 in Lil Durk’s federal trial, as defense attorney Drew Findling used it to argue that Kavon “OTF Vonni” Grant shaped his testimony around one goal: getting out. “You wanna go home or you wanna get life? I wanna go home,” OTF Vonni said on the same recording, and Findling made sure the jury heard every word.
The cross-examination got tense fast. OTF Vonni repeatedly claimed he could not remember prior statements and kept demanding that Findling point him to exact transcript locations before he would engage with questions.
When Findling called out his repeated yawning on the stand, OTF Vonni shot back that he had been up since 3:45 A.M. and did not have the luxury of going back to a hotel afterward.
Findling also played a clip where OTF Vonni talked about his post-trial media plans. “When I get out, Imma do 60 Minutes, because everybody’s gonna want to know,” he said on the call, adding that they would “post that and let it do numbers.”
The defense used that to push the idea that OTF Vonni is not just cooperating for freedom, but building toward a public profile off the back of this case.
Before the cross got underway, OTF Vonni had spent his direct testimony laying out two separate alleged operations targeting Quando Rondo.
The first was in Georgia in May 2021, where OTF Vonni said he arranged stolen vehicles and firearms after someone at a party announced Rondo was nearby, and where he claimed Durk gave the order to locate and go after him. Rondo got away from that gas station shooting without being hurt.
The second operation, in August 2022 in Los Angeles, ended with Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson being killed instead of the intended target, according to reporting from LA Mag.
OTF Vonni testified that Durk brought up Rondo’s Los Angeles appearance during a private flight, and that the crew traveled through San Diego specifically to avoid drawing police attention. He described arranging flights, stolen cars and weapons as routine work at that point in his life.
OTF Vonni also said the assignment made him uneasy, and that he quietly started distancing himself from Durk after the LA operation.
He testified that he wiped down the Infiniti used in the shooting and left it where police would tow it, then lied to Durk and said the car had been burned. He framed his gradual exit as a slow realization that things had gone too far.
He also testified that Durk’s messages and songs after King Von’s death read as indirect calls for retaliation to everyone around him. “It took a toll. We lost somebody we really loved,” OTF Vonni said. “It was clear to everyone. Myself as well.”
Durk has pleaded not guilty throughout, and his legal team’s position is straightforward: OTF Vonni ran the violence himself and is now pointing at Durk to cut his own sentence down.
Findling’s cross was still going when Tuesday’s session broke, with more questions about OTF Vonni’s motives, his cooperation benefits, and the exact reliability of his account still on the table.
