Social media reacted in horror and disbelief as news spread that a young 21-year-old Good Samaritan was gunned down when he attempted to foil a robbery committed on a woman, who was leaving Alkaline’s New Rules event at the National Stadium this morning.

The police confirmed that 21-year-old Orthniel Rowayne Thomas was shot when he attempted to intervene in the motorcycle-assisted robbery. The young man’s killers escaped.

Several messages were shared on WhatsApp and Twitter as friends of Thomas, who hails from James Hill, Clarendon, reacted to the terrible news.

“He was a die-hearted Alkaline fan and had been waiting to go to this show. He would have celebrated his birthday on July 8. Both of his parents are hospitalized, his grandparents, other families are and friends are not taking this one easy at all,” one post read.

The police blotters said that at about 3:50 am, two men on a motorcycle, one armed with a handgun, accosted a group of people coming from the party, along Tom Redcam Road, near the library.

The pillion rider alighted the motorbike and robbed a woman of her bag. Thomas attempted to retrieve the bag and was shot in his left upper back. He collapsed on the roadway, and the other persons, except the woman, ran leaving him. The police said the shooter then escaped on the waiting motorcycle.

The woman stopped a passing police unit which rushed Thomas to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:00 am.
