Popcaan

Dancehall artist Popcaan is known to be quite a character that Unruly fans can’t seem to get enough of. His perpetual gimmicks, including slangs like “yyyy”, “kick out!” “dat is it” and “woi yoii”, definitely keep his followers entertained.

Poppy, whose given name is Andrae Sutherland, always seems to have a mouthful to say about various topics on social media (mostly in a joking manner, of course) but ironically, he seemed short of words in a recent interview on Apple Music 1.

Let’s explore the dialogue…

Dotty (the interviewer):

So, I wanna use this as an opportunity to get to know you a little bit better.

Popcaan:

(Stares intently)

Dotty:

So, I wanna play a song that for you, is defining in your career. What is the song that you would say changed everything for you?

Popcaan:

Clarks.

Dotty:

Big tune. Was that 2010?

Popcaan:

Yeah.

Dotty:

Let’s talk about Clarks, as we’re getting to know you. How many pairs of Clarks do you own, approximately?

Popcaan:

Mi lose count right now still enuh. I have a lot of Clarks still.

Dotty:

You just get sent Clarks, weekly… what’s your favourite pair at the moment?

Popcaan:

I don’t have favourite pair. I love all of them.

Dotty:

Who’s your favourite rapper of all time?

Popcaan:

I don’t have favourite. I just appreciate good music.

Dotty:

What rapper do you listen to the most?

Popcaan:

I don’t listen to no rapper the most. I listen to random, random things. Sometimes, I listen to songs I don’t even know who sing it.

Dotty:

Have you got a favourite Vybz Kartel song? I’d love to play one of your favourite Kartel songs.

Popcaan:

Kingston Story is my favourite Vybz Kartel album still. But you know, I don’t do favourites.

Dotty:

Yeah, I was just about to say, you don’t do favourites.

Popcaan:

Yeah, but that is my favourite Vybz Kartel album.

Dotty:

So you do do favourites…

Popcaan:

No, I don’t.

Dotty:

But, when it comes to Vybz Kartel, you have one favourite project…

Popcaan:

Yeah.

Dotty:

Where did the name Popcaan come from?

Popcaan:

It came from a friend. He died still. His name is Scumpy. It came from in Portmore scheme in 3 West.

Dotty:

What was the context of you being called Popcaan?

Popcaan:

I don’t ever say the reason why on interviews. You know wah I’m saying?

Dotty:

So we’ll never know?

Popcaan:

It’s a mystery.

Dotty:

Do you like popcorn?

Popcaan:

Dotty:

Popcaan:

(Shaking head) no (chuckles)

Dotty:

So when you go to the cinema, you don’t even get popcorn?

Popcaan:

Dotty:

Popcaan:
