The authorities have alleged that it was dancehall star Tommy Lee Sparta’s refusal to accede to a command to re-enter his cell after breakfast, and his decision to hurl his breakfast at a correctional officer, which triggered an altercation at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre on Monday morning.

During the altercation, Tommy Lee Sparta was “subdued” by the C.O and “both parties sustained injuries”.

According to a release sent from the communications department of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), an inmate was admitted to public hospital following an altercation with a correctional officer on Monday morning.

The deejay’s name was never acknowledged in the release. Instead, he was repeatedly referred to as “the inmate”.

According to the release, the Acting Superintendent on duty reported that the inmate refused to re-enter his cell following the distribution of breakfast. Upon repeat of the command, the inmate allegedly hurled his breakfast at the Staff Officer in retaliation.

“He was subdued by the officer and both parties received injuries. The inmate was taken to the Medical Orderly on the compound of the institution for examination and later transferred to a public hospital for further treatment,” the release said.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.

The 34-year-old Spartan Soldier deejay has been incarcerated for over a year after he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition in March 2021. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

In the meantime, the deejay’s management team said they were “monitoring everything very closely”.

“We truly appreciate all your prayers and positive vibrational energy for his speedy recovery,” a representative of Boss Lady Muzik, Inc., management of Tommy Lee Sparta, said in a release.

The Blessings deejay is reportedly still at the Kingston Public Hospital receiving treatment.

The deejay’s attorney Donahue Martin has said he will also be closely monitoring the situation.
