What was supposed to be a night of enjoyment for Dancehall deejay Popcaan at a popular club in East Legon, Ghana, quickly turned chaotic after an altercation and gunfire on Wednesday (January 5).

Rumors of the Bank & God singer’s arrest also spiraled after a viral video surfaced on social media of him being escorted from the scene by police.  However, it appeared that the Ghana Police Service members were simply shielding Popcaan as he left the venue.

In the one-minute and 45-second clip posted to Twitter by @SmoothHefner, three men can be seen banging on the fencing around the club’s premises, before barging in.

After they gain entry, the videographer noted that one of the men pointed, presumably at Popcaan.  There are unconfirmed reports that the men attempted to rob the Jamaican singer.

In the video, the police arrive, and partygoers, as well as onlookers, start to take cover behind motor vehicles as gunshots rang out.

Subsequently, one of the ‘intruders’ from the early portions of the clip was seen in handcuffs, being removed by the police, just as Popcaan was being whisked away.

The Unruly Boss, who donned a pair of red shorts, a white T-shirt and sneakers, appeared relatively calm and was later seen driving himself in a video clip shared to his Instagram Stories.  His armed security sat in the back seat, while a Ghana Police Service vehicle led the way in front.

Popcaan isn’t the only Jamaican entertainer to make headlines in Ghana recently. Just last month dancehall king Beenie Man was the topic of scrutiny after claims were made that he escaped quarantine, shortly after his positive COVID-19 results.

Meanwhile, before yesterday evening’s fiasco, Popcaan, whose given name is Andrae Sutherland took to his official Twitter account to beseech the Jamaican and Ghanaian governments to implement direct flights between the countries.

“Happy new year everyone 🙏🏿 to the government of Ghana and Jamaica, we need a straight flight from Jamaica to Ghana!!! Make it happen please 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿 thanks in advance.”

In an interview with THE STAR, Popcaan’s agent, Sharon Williams said the entertainer is hoping to do a tour in Africa between this month and February, with a booking in Gambia already confirmed for January 15.
