Barbadian megastar and National Hero Rihanna has promised that her new music will arrive very soon.

The 33-year-old responded to a question thrown at her regarding new music, as she exited a taxi, responded “soon soon soon” as she strutted past the reporter who fielded the question.

In the meantime, the singer has registered what has been described as her biggest year ever on Spotify, with more than three billion streams, according to reports.

Last week, ChartData also reported that Rihanna was No. 7 on Spotify’s Top 50 Female Artists of 2021, and despite not releasing an album since 2016’s iconic ANTI, she has never left the top 10 on the yearly chart.

On Tuesday though, ANTI departed the Billboard 200 for the first time since December 2020 after spending 296 weeks on the chart. ANTI is the fifth longest-charting album of all time by a woman and had included songs such as Work, Love on the Brain, and Needed.

Just over a month ago, Rihanna assured her fans that the completion of her upcoming Reggae-inspired/infused R9 album, on which several Dancehall and Reggae artists are rumored to appear, still remained high on her agenda. At the time, she said her fans should, most importantly, ‘expect the unexpected’ from what will be her ninth album.

The Umbrella artist had pointed out that she had been spending time experimenting with different sounds, and as a consequence, the new music on the album, will be sounding vastly different from her previous projects.

Speaking shortly before the recording of her Savage X Fenty Show Volume 3 event, the singer said that the contents of the new album will be unprecedented.

“You’re not going to expect what you hear. Just put that in your mind. Whatever you know of Rihanna is not going to be what you hear and I’m really experimenting. Music is like fashion. You should be able to play. I should be able to wear whatever I want. I treat music the same way. So I’m having fun and it’s going to be completely different,” she had stated in a video shared by the Associated Press.

Last year the nine-time Grammy winner had said she had started recording new music. She had also revealed that she had been staging what she described as “tons of writing camps”. However, despite fans’ incessant clamoring for new music from her, she has still not announced a release date yet for the new album.

Time Magazine, in late 2019, reported that the Rude Boy singer had confirmed that the album was in the making and was “really fun,” but had also insisted that she would go at her own pace and would not be rushed.

She had also said that she was extremely satisfied with a lot of the material that she had so far, but that “makes no sense to rush it, but I want it out”.

“I’ve gotten to the point where I’m like, ‘Even if I don’t have the time to shoot videos, I’m going to put an album out’,” she had said.

Rihanna had also confirmed with Vogue magazine in October 2019 that her new album was going to be “Reggae-inspired or Reggae-infused”. She had also said that it was “not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae, but you’re going to feel the elements in all of the tracks.”

Rihanna, in elaborating on why she chose the Reggae route for her new album, had explained that “that the genre was an important part of her becoming who she is”.

“Reggae always feels right to me,” she said. “It’s in my blood. It doesn’t matter how far or long removed I am from that culture, or my environment that I grew up in; it never leaves. It’s always the same high. Even though I’ve explored other genres of music, it was time to go back to something that I haven’t really homed in on completely for a body of work.”
