The widely regarded King and Queen of Dancehall are both set to release new albums this Friday, August 6 and the buzz for the new releases is already building on the charts.  On Amazon’s Hot New Releases Chart, the list of best-selling new and future digital releases, Vybz Kartel and Spice are at No. 1 and 2 respectively, with Born Fi Dis and 10.

Friday, August 6 is an auspicious date which is also Jamaica’s Independence Day and Spice’s birthday. Despite Kartel’s incarceration and his now dormant Instagram account, his pre-order numbers are proof that the Worl’ Boss is as prolific as ever.

Spice has been in non-stop promo mode since the release of her hypnotic single Go Down Deh, hyping up her loyal Besties to get their copies early. 10 represents the culmination of Spice’s 10-year journey under the VP banner, and showcases her songwriting versatility while blending hardcore dancehall with soca, pop, R&B, and EDM sounds.

Other stand-outs from the 15 track album include Send It Up (the follow-up single to Go Down Deh), Po-Po (featuring Spice’s 14-year old son, Nicho), her breakthrough anthem So Mi Like It, which has racked up nearly 100 million video views, and Don’t Care.

THROWBACK: Kartel and Spice

Meanwhile, Vybz Kartel’s 12 track LP Born Fi Dis arrives just in time for the 2022 Grammy nomination season. A frequent collaborator and close friend of the blue-haired diva (Ramping Shop, Conjugal Visit, Backway), it’s interesting they aren’t featured on each other’s albums, possibly owing to Spice’s obligations overseas. Still, the Gaza Nation is on high alert for Kartel’s second album of 2021 following March’s X-Rated, in what seems to be the Teacha’s new trend of dropping two albums per year.

The tracklist includes the previously released Airforce 1 featuring Likkle Vybz, Likkle Addi, Aikodon, and Nae Finesse, as well as another father-son link up on No Cap, also featuring Likkle Vybz and Likkle Addi. Other cuts include The Law and The Menace, and all tracks were produced by his longtime partner Tanesha ‘Shorty’ Johnson of Short Boss Muzik and Vybz Kartel Muzik banners.
