Reggae singer Romain Virgo recently celebrated receiving his plaque from Billboard for his album Lovesick which made its mark on the Reggae Album Chart when it debuted at No. 1 three years ago.

The album, released by VP Records in March 2018, sold 296 copies in the first week.  Several of the songs on the 16 track set were produced by Nicholas Browne (Lifeline Music).  Standout entries were In This Together, Sweet Liar, Caress Me, Face to Face and a cover of Sam Smith’s Stay With Me.

An obviously elated Virgo posed with his latest acquisition on Instagram today. The singer detailed his journey to this point of recognition in his caption. “In a few years from now I will tell Emma and Raina that it took me 10 years, 2 EPs and 3 Albums before I got a #1 Debut on the Billboard Reggae Chart, in the year 2018,” he said.

“I have just 1 more to go before I start unleashing what the FUTURE OF MY MUSIC will look like.”

He was also thankful to all of his supporters and fans for walking with him on the journey to success. “I appreciate everyone who have been here with me on this musical journey. Thank you for the continued love and support over the years… Nothing at all is taken for granted. 1 Love  The work continues,” he added.

Several popular Jamaican artists took the time to congradulate him for his achievement. One of the first was Shenseea who said: “Congrats bro,” while Bounty Killer said: “The goals going towards the gold congrats.”

Tami Chin Mitchell added: “Amazing!!! Congrats Romain and here’s to MORE!!!” while Chris Gayle and Sevana used emoticons to convey their well wishes.

Virgo who is from Stepney in Saint Ann Parish first caught the ears of fans when he appeared in the television choir contest All Together Sing in 2006. He used that experience to enter and win the Digicel Rising Stars competition in 2007 when he was just 17-years-old and hadn’t even completed high school yet. He became the youngest contestant to ever claim the JA$1,000,000 prize.

He eventually met Donovan Germain, a short while after winning the competition and this connection would help him to produce his first hit record Mi Caan Sleep on the Penthouse label. His impressive vocal range helped him to gain a steady following over the years.

When Lovesick was released, Virgo told Jamaica Observer of the inspiration behind the album, explaining that he wanted to convey the message of love and the range of emotions the feeling can cause in a person.

“I believe love is the one thing that’s going to save us, not just in terms of relationships, but in the broader human sense. I personally believe that nothing forms a stronger bond than love. It cuts through race, religion, creed — everything. We need to put it at the centre of our lives,” he said.
