Dancehall heavyweight Sean Paul shared an excellent meme recently that started up some spirited debates on Twitter.  In the midst of a worldwide pandemic, the deejay issued words of caution to the masses to keep up with their health through frequent testing of their body temperatures.

In doing so he posted a meme of a cartoon drawing with a man checking his temperature with a thermometer that read, “I got the right temperature to shelter you from the storm,” on the screen, which quotes a verse from his 2006 hit single Temperature.

He captioned the Tweet on February 18, “In these covid times make sure u have the right temperature.”

The post, while very funny and liked over 300,000 times, got several mixed reactions from his followers.

Many incorrectly thought Paul was bringing some much-needed attention to the current crisis in Texas.  The state recently suffered the wrath of an unprecedented winter storm, which left nearly half a million people without power since last Thursday morning. The state’s Republican Senator, Ted Cruz came under fire for not responding adequately to the situation, and more so after he was seen boarding a flight to Cancún, Mexico for a family vacation as millions of people in his state struggled to stay warm and find enough food and clean water in the ongoing dangerous, freezing conditions.

“I thought this was commentary on the texas situation at first,” said one Twitter user under Paul’s post. Another person also commented saying Sean’s funny meme has done way more for Texas than its reigning Senator, “With one Tweet, Sean-A-Paul – Mr “so mi go so then” has done more for us then Ted Cruz has done for Texas.”

Others thought the Temperture deejay was simply genius with his public service announcement, “He’s the covid hero we never knew we needed,” one person said.

While another added, “this is the most valuable covid tweet ever created.”

Many of the other Tweets however revealed people’s brain-altering surprise at discovering those were actually the lyrics of the song.  Some also shared their hacked version of the lines, which they’ve been messing up all these years.

“I thought it was “Shatter you from the stone”, I don’t know why that made sense to me,” said one.

“I always sang it “ I got the right temperature to shut you up from the start oh ah,” another said.

“For the longest time I thought it was “I got the right temperature frescetta you from the storm” and that makes no sense but I still sang it like that was normal to say.”

Another fan declared, “literally!! especially with this song, we don’t need the right words when we have the right vibes”.

Temperature was featured on Sean Paul’s album The Trinity and celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.  The song became his biggest hit single in the U.S., which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 the following year and spent 17 weeks in the top 10.

It reached the top 10 in Canada and France and the top 20 in the United Kingdom, peaking at No. 11 there. In Australia, Temperature debuted at No. 19 but quickly found its way to No. 5 the following weeks. The track is featured on the Applause riddim and became Sean Paul’s first single to sell an excess of one million digital downloads, eventually earning 4 platinum certifications in the US.
