As talk surrounding Dancehall’s evolution continues, deejay Gage has dropped a new track with a throwback vibe honoring Ninjaman.

The three-minute trip down memory lane titled Don Gorgon heaps praise on the lyrical icon and noted pioneer of clash culture, down to his flashy bling and his acting roles. The new song is found on Gage’s new Redroom 90s Mixtape which also features other homage paying cuts to the era like Bubble Like Soup, Nineties, and Dancehall.

Produced by Riddim Nation, Gage chronicles the enduring emcee’s rise to fame, and his contribution to the genre and culture. While the Trap Dancehall vs traditional Dancehall debate rages on, Gage goes back to basics on this one, shouting out the undisputed Don Gorgon for his hand in guiding the music and all he achieved in his heyday.

Since his late 80’s come up, Ninjaman’s aura and delivery have been engrossing facets of his fame, and he’s known as the only Jamaican artist to send venues into a frenzy before uttering one word on stage. On one such occasion at Sunsplash in 1990, Ninja christened himself “Di original front teeth, gold teeth, Gun Pon Teeth, brush teeth with toothpaste Don Gorgon.” It was a defining moment in the Cover Me deejay’s decorated career, and the clip serves as the intro to Gage’s tribute.

The youngblood goes in on the thumping pulse, playing up Ninjaman’s image, style, and notoriety.

“Di whole place shell an him nuh chat, Ninja Man/ Fat Benz black pon black, Ninja Man/ Yuh waa hear lyrics pon di spot, Ninja Man/ Di baddest ting weh up a cell block, dats Ninja Man/ Harsh like ginger/ Ten b—t gold ring pon finga”, he spits on the first verse.

Gage is the latest Dancehall artist to pay homage to the icon. Just weeks ago, Dancehall queen Spice sent birthday greetings to her early mentor from the days when she was still just an unknown teenage talent. “Happy birthday Ninja Man Living Legend. I’ll never forget how supportive you were towards me, 15 year old little girl trying to make it WOW‼ Look at God,” she wrote on Instagram. “Lord I pray Ninja Man will have a early release a road jah jah he has a heart of Gold 🙏🏾 #HBDNinjaMan,” she added.

Ninjaman and his co-convicts were sentenced to life in prison in December 2017 for the 2009 murder of Ricardo ‘Ricky Trooper’ Johnson. He must serve at least 25 years in prison before being eligible for parole.

Gage is best known for his hit songs Throat (2014), Motivation (2018) and Good P-ssy Gal (2019). Check out his new mixtape below.
