Koffee Still Has Charts On Lockdown

It’s been nearly two weeks since its July 17 release, but Koffee’s Lockdown is still trending steadily upwards and is unwavering in the number one spot. The groovy quarantine jam has been hot on everyone’s playlist since the moment it dropped, and it broke records for local artistes within two days, when it became the first single by a Jamaican musician to surpass 1 million views in less than 48 hours.

Lockdown is still the number one trending song in Jamaica and has so far racked up just under 5.5 million views on YouTube.  It also occupies in the No.1 position on Apple Music for several Caribbean countries, including Jamaica, Antigua, Grenada, and Belize.

In an interview with the STAR, the 20-year-old singer, born Mikayla Simpson, said she was humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response to the track.

“It’s amazing to feel so much love and support from people. I’m humbled and excited, to be honest,” she said. “When I was putting together this song, I was thinking to myself: ‘What would be the first thing I’d want to do coming out of quarantine?’ It’s been a rough couple of months globally, and so having some fun again and connecting with people again, feeling that excitement, that’s what was on my mind. I did not expect this at all, and it’s really amazing.”

And she has definitely managed to convey that excitement and anticipation to not just her fans, in quarantine, but other people in lockdown–like Vybz Kartel.

The incarcerated deejay gave Koffee his approval on his verified Instagram account via two Instagram Stories.

“Koffee star! What a likkle gal bad!!!!! Lockdown a me song. Koffee I’m feeling you,” he said. The World boss dropped a few bars from the song in a subsequent story: “Mummy me go NASCAR pull up inma fas’ car.”

Other popular entertainers have also shown their love for the single, including Sevana, who shared a video of herself dancing to the tune.

Other big names in the industry like Protoje, Lila Iké, Jada Kingdom, Dre Island, Teflon, Popcaan, Kelissa, and Beenie Man had good things to say about the release in the comments section when she announced it on Instagram.

Lockdown garnered even more attention and love on Saturday night when the young artiste strategically used it to close her performance on the Taste of Reggae Sumfest virtual concert.

Fans took to social media to share their love for her entire performance, but especially the new single.

Danielle Mullings tweeted, “Ahhh suh Sumfest done. You know what time it issss?

Lockdown is Koffee’s first major solo effort since winning the Grammy award for the Best Reggae Album earlier this year with her Rapture EP. In doing so, she made history by becoming the first woman to ever take home the award for the category, and also its youngest recipient ever. The Spanish Town, St. Catherine native was 19 years old at the time.
