Jamaican dancehall singjay Christopher Martin was not prepared for what transpired during his performance at the “Big Deal Concert” at the Impala Grounds in Nairobi, Kenya recently. Apart from the extensive muggings that the fans endured while watching him perform, Martin was faced with an uncomfortable situation on stage.

While he was facing the band in preparation to start one of his songs, a male fan jumped up on stage to embrace the Jamaica artiste just as he spun around to start singing. The man held onto the I’m a Big Deal singer with such a force that you could see Martin struggle a bit to break free from the embrace.  Watch it below.

One would think, that if the patron was such a fan, he would have known that Jamaican deejays all follow the same protocol as it concerns the opposite sex. Second to the Jamaican motto ‘Out of Many, One People’, there is another mantra, ‘Bun a Batty Man’. That means, a gay or effeminate man have no place in their lives and may falter to some brutal consequences if they try to impose themselves.

While this may not be the case in all scenarios, because there are in fact several homosexual communities throughout the island, it is however rare for you to see a public display of this nature. Additionally, in dancehall culture it is considered highly disrespectful for a man to ‘affectionately’ approach another man under any circumstances, especially in public and on a stage with thousands of onlookers.

So it was actually a commendable reaction on Martin’s part, handling the incident as calmly and professionally as he did. However it didn’t occur without the dancehall artiste expressing his feelings. Apparently Zuzu felt something more than a friendly hug during the exchange, which prompted him to say, “ Nu wine pon mi bwoy, yuh modda bloodclat.”

Still, by showing his appreciation for his fans Martin continued by explaining that they must draw a line when they show him love. He said, “ Nairobi, it’s all love right, it’s all love, it’s all love right, you know he can hug me you know, he can hug me but I don’t want him to do this on me (gesturing: wining his waistline) it’s no good, no good, no good my brother okay.”

The Jamaican deejay finished the show with a stella performance despite the unwanted male attention he received, leaving his Nairobian fans happy for the most part and a little more educated about Jamaica dancehall culture. He also later apologised to the fans who were mugged during the show, as expected it was completely out of his control.
